The way we gather, the way we eat. Drive West or north to a scenic spot, on the edge of the fields in a country village, or isolated on the cliffs. The restaurants always look out onto a valley or over a cliff, but we face each other on long tables, children and grandmothers at either end, and we eat: spaghetti with a dark, rich sauce and salty grated cheese, then fried rabbit with loads of garlic or in a gravy sauce, with mountains of chips, and house wine, honest wine, and cold Cisk, then peanuts in their shells, mountains piled high in the middle of the table, there's a flash of fists, then everywhere shells... we talk over each other, the summer light fades, the night sets in, grandmother is nodding off, the children whine and disappear under the table, Uncle Joe is a little tipsy and mother is upset about something. The liqueurs arrive: averna or limoncello these days, and some have a ball of chocolate ice-cream. Then coffee, sometimes it's good sometimes not, an argument at the other end of the table is boiling, but quickly it is defused and the men embrace, their gold men bracelets catching the light as they pat each other vigorously.

At midnight the proprietors start to shuffle around the table and a bill is placed in front of the oldest looking man on the table. Everyone pulls 15 euro out of their pockets and walk outside for a cigarette. The night is still, and we imagine the fields, we see the distant urban lights, or nothing, just the blackness of the vast mediterranean sea beyond the cliffs. There is an Italian expression which says that at table we never grow old. Out here under the night sky we are laughing, and stumbling, grandmother has her hands on her hips again, dad is enjoying a cigarillo, we linger a while more, until the lights in the establishment are switched off and the humming of air conditioning dies down.
